How do you get money from abroad?
When your music is played abroad, on the radio, in shops or in other public places, you are entitled to payment, just as in Norway. As a member, Gramo collects this for you automatically. You do not need to do anything yourself.
How it works
From the moment your music is played abroad until the money is in your account, there are four steps.
- Reports from abroad
Gramo receives reports of what has been played from the organisations we cooperate with. - We find your recordings
Gramo goes through the reports and finds the Norwegian recordings that have been used. - The money is transferred to Gramo
The organisations abroad distribute the money and transfer the amount to Gramo. - Payment to you
Gramo pays the money on to you.

The amount from abroad varies from year to year. Usually this is because the music has been played more or less from one year to the next. In addition, the money from the organisations may arrive at different times, because they make payments according to their own routines.
You can choose where we collect from
By default, Gramo collects money from all the countries we cooperate with. This suits most people. If you want something different, you can choose from these options:
Worldwide (default)
Gramo collects money from all the countries we cooperate with. You get this automatically when you become a member.
WORLDWIDE
Norway only
Gramo collects money in Norway only.
REGIONAL
Worldwide minus some countries
The same as “worldwide”, but you choose some countries to leave out.
WORLDWIDE -
Norway plus some countries
Gramo collects money in Norway, plus the countries you choose.
REGIONAL +
If you leave out some countries, Gramo does not collect the money from there. The money will then either remain undistributed with the foreign organisation, or you will have to use an external agent who takes commission.

Frequently asked questions
Gramo and TONO both collect money for the use of music, but we administer different rights.
- Gramo collects for the use of the sound recording itself. The money goes to the artists and musicians who performed on the recording, and to the producers who arranged and paid for it.
- TONO collects for the use of the work, meaning the music and the lyrics. The money goes to composers, lyricists and music publishers.
When a track is played on the radio, the station pays both Gramo and TONO. If you both wrote and recorded the track, you can be a member of both.
- Gramo is a collective management organisation. We manage rights for people who have sung or played on a recording (performers), and for those who have organised and paid for the production of the recording (producers).
- GramArt is an interest organisation. They work to promote the interests of artists and musicians.
No. At Gramo, the producer is the person or company that finances and organises the recording, for example a record label, or someone who releases their own music.
You give notice in writing. If you send your notice by 30 September, your membership ends at the turn of the year on 31 December. If you give notice later, your membership continues until the turn of the following year.
At Gramo, remuneration is a form of payment or compensation set by law, while royalties are a form of payment agreed between the parties.
- Remuneration is a statutory right to payment when recorded music is performed in public, for example on the radio, on TV, in shops or in cafés.
- Royalties usually refers to other forms of payment agreed between two or more parties, for example in an agreement between an artist and a record label. Royalties can come from streaming, sales, licensing for film and TV, and the like.
